Toxic Substance

 

DEFINITION

Division 6.1 toxic substances are substances which are liable to cause death or injury or to harm human death if swallowed, inhaled, or contacted by skin.

Note: Toxins from plant, animal or bacterial sources which do not contain any infectious substances or toxins that are contained in substances which are not infectious substances should be considered for classification in Division 6.1 and assignment to UN 3172.

CLASSIFICATION

To be classified as “Toxic” for the purposes of this regulations, a substance must meet the minimum criteria of Packing Group III shown in the current edition of IATA DGR.

(a)  Tear gas substances must be included in Packing Group II even if their toxicity data corresponds to Packing Group III values.

RESTRICTIONS:

1) Substance with subsidiary hazards will not be accepted.

2) UN 3123 (Biomedical waste) and UN 3125 (Toxic solids, water reactive, n.o.s  not to be accepted).

3) Shipment in Limited Quantity will not be accepted for carriage. Hence, shipment with packing instructions Y641, Y642, Y644, Y645, and Y680 will not be accepted.

4)  Pesticides of any sort falling under the List of Dangerous Goods will not be accepted.

5)  Chemically unstable substances of Division 6.1 are forbidden for transport unless it is booked under special provision A209.

6)  No toxic gas is allowed for transportation in IndiGo Aircrafts. Only substance in the solid and liquid form is to be accepted.

7)  Not allowed in ATR Flights

PACKAGING

GENERAL PACKAGING REQUIREMENT

  1. The shipper is responsible for all aspects of the packing of dangerous goods in compliance with these regulations.
  2. When preparing each packages of dangerous goods, shipper must
  3. Comply with the set of packing requirements appropriate to the type of packaging to be used.
  4. packaging permitted by the applicable packing instruction.
  5. Assemble and secure all components of the packaging exactly in the manner intended.
  6. External surfaces of assembled packages are clean of contamination.

The shipper shall produce the “UN Certificate of packaging” accompanying every shipment to be tendered under this category.

MARKING AND LABELLING

MARKING
  1. The shipper is responsible for all necessary marking and labelling of each package of dangerous goods and each overpack containing dangerous goods, in compliance with the Regulations laid down in the current edition of IATA DGR.
  2. Each package must be of such a size that there is adequate space to affix all required marks.
  3. For each package and overpack requiring one or more marks, the shipper must:                                    
  4. Remove or obliterate any irrelevant mark already on the package or overpack.
  5. Ensure that each outer or single packaging used for dangerous goods, for which specification packaging is required.                    
  6. All marks must be durable and printed or otherwise marked on, or affixed to, the external surface of the package or overpack, readily visible and legible.
  7. English must be used in addition to any other regional language as required by State of origin.

Each packages of DG must be marked, durably and legibly on the outside of the packages with each of the following:

PROPER SHIPPING NAME(S)

  1. UN NUMBER(S)
  2. NAME AND ADDRESS of the shipper and the consignee.
  3. NET QUANTITY of dangerous goods contained in each package.

If packed with Dry Ice                  

for UN 1845—Carbon dioxide, solid (dry ice) the NET WEIGHT of dry ice contained in each package must be shown.                       

LABELLING

For each such package and overpack requiring labelling, the shipper must:

remove or obliterate any irrelevant labelling already on the package or overpack.

Label must be in durable quality and correct specification.

Each package must be labelled with the below label.

Name: Toxic                       

Cargo IMP Code: RPB                                               

When the inner content is liquid, “This Side Up” label will also apply in addition to the above label.

CARGO ACCEPTANCE DOCUMENTS

The following documents from the shipper / agent are required for booking shipments under this class:

  • Dangerous Goods must only be accepted if accompanied by.
  • 2 copies of DGD
  • UN certificate of packaging
  • A copy of the DG certificate of the person signing the DGD.
  • A copy of the MSDS of the shipment (for reference in case of Emergency)
